Our Stories

This web site provides a record of the University of Notre Dame Australia East Timor Project managed by the Edmund Rice Centre. The Edmund Rice Centre is now independent of the University of Notre Dame and this project is no longer collecting donations. For current information see the Bakhita Project.

One of the 60 generators supplied to East Timor by our project is connected up in Ainaro and the seminary has lights for the first time in almost a year.

Alex's Story - One of the most amazing experiences for my group was walking the 100 kms or so from Letefoho to Dili in one day, near the end of the trip. Apart from it being physically insane, it was spiritually rich because we were amongst one and a half thousand people from our village all walking together to attend the ordainment of 3 seminarians to priests by Bishop Belo...

Helena's Story - My most challenging experience was the climb up Mount Ramelau, someone forgot to tell me beforehand exactly how high the mountain is. We were told that it was a four hour hike, originally I thought it was four hours return and was rather dubious when I found it was four hours each way...

Paul's Story - Pedro was one of the more outgoing members of my English class. Although only 15, he was quite fluent in English and took great pride in showing off his ability to the rest of the class. In one of the exercises we did in the class, where the students were asked to write their daily timetable in English, he took great pleasure in differentiating himself by allocating a significant amount of time to watching television...

Nick's Story - It was difficult to comprehend that some of the children living in the village of Viqueque had never visited, nor swam in the ocean, being situated only 20 kilometres from the Timor Sea. This never occurred to us, students from the Port City of Fremantle...

John and Bryn's Story - In October 2000, John McCarthy of Seton College, Fremantle and Bryn Jones of the University of Notre Dame, Australia spent 2 weeks in East Timor deploying the 50 computers sent previously in the container. They also began to make contact with groups that could use the hundreds of computers that they expect to provide in the next 12 months. This is their story.
