The Journey

This web site provides a record of the University of Notre Dame Australia East Timor Project managed by the Edmund Rice Centre. The Edmund Rice Centre is now independent of the University of Notre Dame and this project is no longer collecting donations. For current information see the Bakhita Project.

10 Notre Dame students and 2 staff plus a teacher from Seton College travelled to East Timor as part of Notre Dame's Humanitarian Aid Mission to East Timor.
The students are working teaching English in four villages.
The teacher is trying to establish computer training facilities in Dili.
Before starting on these tasks, the party went on a pilgrimage to the most sacred sites of East Timor.

"Welcome to the most recent country in the world"

So this is East Timor!

With many of the cars burnt in the post referendum destruction, trucks are a common method of transport, particularly for people in rural areas.

One more! One More! One of the Dili taxis. Fortunately the roads are not too busy.

UN truck. These vehicles are a common sight all over East Timor. In the background is the UN helipad.

The Notre Dame party gets ready for the Pilgrimage. Note the petrol in plastic jerry cans,
there are only two petrol stations with pumps left working.
